Advantages of City Breaks

There are numerous benefits to choosing a city break over snow skiing in the Alps or spending a week on a paradise island and the first is that you get to really soak up the culture of the city you are visiting. Take London for example, there are so many cultural experiences to enjoy, so many locals to meet an a wide variety of fantastic cuisine to enjoy. These are things you may get at a seaside location, but chances are when visiting the beach you are going to spend your time on the beach and not focusing on things to do around you that give you that cultural experience that only a city break can provide.

Next you get so many sights to choose from. You can visit historical sites, palaces, cathedrals, museums and so much more. You can get a feel for an area, but through visiting the array of sights, you can also identify what makes this particular city such a welcome destination, maybe even for future holidays with the family.

Cities are brimming with exciting attractions that you can explore and enjoy. Think of some of the sightseeing experiences available. There are walking tours, boat tours and most cities these days have a giant Ferris wheel that will take you high into the sky giving you a birds eye view of the city and as far as your eyes can see, such as the London Eye, which caters to thousands of visitors each month showing them the River Thames, the city and so much more with recorded guide.

A city will have fantastic restaurants to choose from and you aren’t limited to one type of cuisine. You will find that you can get all types of foods and a range of restaurants from relaxed family restaurants to fine dining establishments. This ensures you get to taste an array of foods from different restaurants during your stay. Try something different, be a bit daring with your food choices and have some fun with it.

Of course, when you go to any city you are not spoiled for choice when it comes to hotels. You will find everything from three star bed and breakfasts to four star guest houses to five star luxury hotels where you can choose from a host of rooms, you can order twenty four hour room service and you can take advantage of their on-site wellness centre or gym during your stay.

City breaks are more affordable than you may think. When you head to the snow capped peaks to go skiing or you head to a seaside location to enjoy some fun in the sun, you will find it just as expensive if not more, especially when in season. Ski resorts are going to be considerably more expensive during winter, while seaside resorts will push up their prices during the summer months. City hotels tend to offer the same rates with a choice of packages you can choose from to work within your budget.

The final advantage to a city break is that you get variety. You can easily visit as a family and chow that the entire family will be able to do things that they enjoy.

The Perfect Family Getaway On A Tropical Thai Beach

For the past few years my wife and kids have been searching high and low for the perfect holiday destination that has something for all of the family to keep everyone fully entertained, but at the same time offers peace, quiet and right environment to be able to immerse oneself in, totally unwind and get off the treadmill so to speak. We have been to some really nice spots during our search, but in all of the experiences we enjoyed, each one was missing one or more of the key ingredients that we all agreed as being entirely necessary in order for all of us to be totally satisfied and content. However, we have just returned from our most recent family vacation and finally we can gladly report that we have found the perfect family getaway (providing your family enjoy beach holidays) and we wanted to share our find with all of you who take the time to read this post.

The Location

The place we found that has something to keep us all entertained and happy was a relatively unspoiled 20km stretch of sandy beaches on the Andaman coast with a tropical jungle backdrop. -The region is called Khao Lak and it is roughly an hour’s drive from Phuket International airport, and within Khao Lak is 3 main tourist spots; Bang La On, Khuk Khak & Bang Niang. Khao Lak literally means Lak Mountain and there is a nature reserve on the mountain that makes for one of the local attractions which we thoroughly enjoyed during our nature walks and guided Jungle treks. Each of the three spots are fairly quiet, and have accommodations ranging from the height of luxury all the way through to the backpackers spots to offer something for all budgets and make this quaint, beautiful location in Thailand accessible for all to experience. Actually if you like the more quiet side of things while on holiday then Khao Lak is not only somewhere that is perfect as a family holiday spot, but also for anyone who is wanting to unwind and relax in nature, and in my opinion it makes for the ideal honeymoon location as there are many attractions that are impressive and interesting, while not being too flashy and intrusive. If you want to go and Khao Lak at an especially quiet time of year then I would advise going during the low season months which are from April-November.

The Accommodation

Like I mentioned earlier in this post; there are accommodations to suit all budgets and cater for most tastes and requirements in a place to lay their head. We opted for renting a villa within a resort as we know from experience that this will make our lives easier with their being staff on all during most hours to support us with whatever we needed. Also we like the privacy you get with a villa while still having a resort swimming pool, bar, restaurant and in this specific case – a Kids Club, which suited us perfectly. So during the days we could leave the children to enjoy themselves with whatever the Kids Club had organised for that day, while my wife and I would go off on our scooter or on a guided tour to investigate the nearby attractions and places of interest – which there are many. The Villa also had a stunning sea view over the beach that according to local people had the best, most beautiful sunset in the province. The beach is your ideal, soft, sandy type and the sea water is warm and as clear as can be, actually scuba diving is known to be quite enjoyable in this area as there is lots of sea life and many interesting things to see. So if you enjoying diving, then be sure to book some fun dives when visiting Khao Lak.

What You Need to Know About the Notting Hill Carnival

This event welcomes the vibes of calypso music, food stalls offering Caribbean flavours and delights and so much more. It is important to note at this point that the roads used by the parade are closed off, so if you are thinking of attending, it’s worthwhile making use of the local bus service to get to the carnival and back home or to your hotel.

This carnival has been held in Notting Hill since 1966 and has more than fifty thousand participants taking part in the parade and event with thirty sound systems which are strategically placed throughout the streets and more than one million people attend each and every year.

There are some very important things you are going to want to remember if you are thinking of attending the Notting Hill Carnival this year with the first being that you will want to use the bus service and to your own vehicle or the tube. While the tube may appear to be the most convenience, the tube service is suspended during the event, but there are extra buses which are put on service to manage the spectators and ensure you get to and from the event safely. It’s worthwhile speaking to your concierge service to identify what bus service to use, along with the time for that day.

The next thing is as a woman, don’t fall into the trap of wearing high heels, ensure you wear flat shoes, sandals if it’s a nice day. There isn’t much seating space and if you want to move along with the parade and experience all the carnival has to offer, then you will be thankful for wearing sensible shoes rather than high heels which can make the day uncomfortable.

In addition to this, the Notting Hill Carnival does take place in the summer months and the sun in London can get exceptionally hot, especially if you are not used to it. Be sure to pack a bag for you and the family which includes sun cream, a sun hat and sun glasses. It’s advisable to throw in a few bottles of water to reduce the risk of dehydration while attending this fun event.

Remember this is a day of family fun, so take the children along. If you have younger children, ensure that they have comfortable shoes. That they have your telephone number in case they get lost and for younger ones, take the push chair. You may think the push chair is going to get in the way, but when you spend a day on your feet enjoying the festivities, carrying your youngest child is not something you are going to want to be doing you will be thankful you packed the push chair to take along with you.

When you choose where to stand to watch the parade, take careful note of where the speakers are located and try and move a little bit away. Remember these speakers are catering to thousands of people and they can be exceptionally loud. Unless you love loud music, you may find moving away slightly will make your experience a little more enjoyable.
